What is the World Interfaith Harmony Week Coopetition?

The World Interfaith Harmony Week Coopetition is a 7 day global challenge to promote acts of peace, collaboration and tolerance between people of all faith, spiritual, and humanistic traditions. Beginning on February 1st and going through February 7th, individuals and teams will use the spirit of coopetition to inspire acts collaborative acts of service to give back to their communities and strengthen mutual respect, understanding, and harmony between people of all backgrounds.

The Harmony Week Coopetition is an incredible opportunity for any organization, group, congregation, place of worship or interfaith community to play in the Games in the spirit of a growing global unity and respect for all members of the human family. By using the innate desire of playfulness that exists within us all, the competitive altruism of the Games inspire and catalyze people to strive together for the greater good of compassion and service for others, ourselves, and the world.

The World Interfaith Harmony Week was first proposed at the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2010 by H.M. King Abdullah II of Jordan. Just under a month later, on October 20, 2010, it was unanimously adopted by the UN and henceforth the first week of February will be observed as a World Interfaith Harmony Week. Why Play in World Interfaith Harmony Week?

The purpose of the World Interfaith Harmony Week Coopetition is:

1. To celebrate and make known the strong undercurrent of interfaith work already happening in the world, and to bring attention to this remarkable work so its positive momentum can continue to inspire and grow;
2. To amplify existing efforts and create new initiatives to further the reach of the interfaith movement, and to raise a broader awareness in the world’s communities that interfaith unity is possible. In addition, we want to ignite a sense of urgency for the need of this movement more now than ever;
3. To encourage faith communities around the world to reach out to their neighbors of different faiths in order to create new relationships of respect, understanding, and collaboration to expand the reach of the interfaith movement throughout the world.

How to Play!

There are many ways that individuals and teams can play, from organizing creative service projects to performing acts of kindness. All players and teams are encouraged to collaborate with those from diverse faiths as an act of interfaith harmony and peace. During each day of World Interfaith Harmony Week, all players and teams will receive a Secret Agent of Compassion mission, offering tangible ideas and inspiration for ways to play. Players then report on their activities on the Compassion Report Map. The reports of Registered Teams are reflected on the World Interfaith Harmony Week Coopetition Scoreboard, displaying the number of volunteers, number of hours served, number of people served, and the monies raised for local or global causes.

The Dakota people have a special ceremony used for times of difficulty: the Wopida. Wopida is a sacred sharing of gratitude, a connecting with all beings through giving thanks. The purpose of the Global Wopida is to be grateful for whatever Life bestows on us, knowing that every test and challenge comes into our lives for our spiritual growth and development to protect and restore Mother Earth. The spiritual understanding of Wopida requires each of us to live with honor, compassion, love, respect and harmony with all life.

The Global Wopida is expressed by a 6 month campaign called “Build a Global Fire,” intended to keep the fires of humanity burning bright long into the New Year, where we will come together once more on June 21st, World Peace and Prayer Day, for the Spring Equinox.

The Souper Bowl!

Kick-off World Interfaith Harmony Week and the Super Bowl by playing in the Souper Bowl! Between February 1st and February 7th, congregations and groups will work together to collect as many containers of soup as possible to fill our food banks. Which group can collect the most soup per member?! On Super Bowl Sunday, soup items will be tallied to show how much good can be done by us coming together across

the country to work in caring and compassionate action for others. Learn more!

Sun-Up Our Sanctuaries!
